Local news report today, that Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is set to be breaking ground for the 83 MW Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal power plant.

To be completed by 2021, KenGen is pushing its geothermal development further with the ongoing construction of the 165 MW Olkaria V, which is to start commissioning in July 2019.

With those projects, when the come online, KenGen will add 248 MW increasing the country’s geothermal power generation capacity to around 920 MW.  With further development ongoing by private developers in Menengai, Kenya is scratching the threshold to join the 1 GW Geothermal Country Club by 2021.

KenGen, which has an installed energy capacity of 1,631MW, expects to generate another 2,029MW from geothermal by 2028. Another 90MW will be sourced from hydro power, 410MW from wind and 40MW of solar energy is expected to push the firm’s capacity to 4,200MW.

Today, Kenya ranks no. 9 in the Top 10 ranking of geothermal power generating countries in the world.
