Star Energy Geothermal has announced plans of expanding their installed geothermal power generation capacity by 102.6 MWe by retrofitting their existing assets and increasing the capacities in their operating fields. The announcement was made during the recent Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition in Jakarta, which Star Energy also hosted.
“By retrofitting and increasing the capacity of existing generators, we are ensuring a sustainable and efficient future for clean energy in this country,” said Hendra Tan, CEO of Barito Renewables, the parent company of Star Energy Geothermal. The total investment for the expansion plans is estimated at USD 346 million.
The details of the capacity expansion plan are as follows:
- 40 MW expansion of Salak Unit 7. This project will leverage the Salak Injection Realignment Program.
- 30 MW expansion of Wayang Windu Unit 3. This will involve the optimization of existing surface facilities to increase the total capacity.
- 18.4 MW capacity increase of Wayang Windu Units 1 and 2 thru an engineering retrofit. Each unit will be expanded to have a capacity of 124.45 MW. Fuji Electric Co. and PT Wasa Mitra are Star Energy’s partners for this initiative.
- 7.2 MW capacity increase of Salak Units 4, 5, and 6 thru the replacement of turbine rotors and diaphragms to improve efficiency. PT Fuji Electric Indonesia is the partner for this project.
- 7 MW capacity increase in Darajat Unit 3 thru technological upgrades. This will increase the capacity of Darajat Unit 3 from 122 MW to 129 MW. PT Mitsubishi Power Indonesia is working with Star Energy for this project.
Moreover, Star Energyy has entered into a partnership agreement with PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy focusing on laboratory services and geochemical fluid sampling and analysis to improve operational and efficiency and compliance with Good Corporate Governance principles.
Before the end of 2023, Star Energy Geothermal started commercial operations of the 15-MW Salak binary geothermal power plant.
Aside from their Wayang Windu, Salak, and Darajat operating fields, Star Energy also holds the license for geothermal greenfields Gunung Hamiding in North Maluku and Sekincau in Lampung.
