AP Renewables Inc. (APRI) has signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute Co. Ltd (SDEPCI) for the Bay Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Bay, Laguna, Philippines. This project will provide battery storage for APRI’s Makban geothermal power plant, allowing it to support the power grid during periods of peak demand and power disruption.

“We are excited to be the host of this new investment. It contributes to the country’s energy transition and brings additional value to our host communities,” said APRI President Jeffrey Estrella during the signing of the EPC contract.

Aside from augmenting the reliability of the geothermal power plant, the project will also uplift the regional economy by promoting industrial growth, creating jobs, and sustaining local economic activity by ensuring the supply of clean and dependable power.

Alex Coo, COO of APRI, also described the project as a “groundbreaking milestone, being the first-ever BESS and geothermal hybrid system in the Philippines.”

APRI operates both the Tiwi and Makban geothermal power plants in the Philippines. In 2022, APRI awarded the EPC contract for a 17-MW binary power plant expansion of the Tiwi geothermal project to Ormat Technologies and Desco Inc.
