SOCAR Green, the green energy subsidiary of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), has signed two key deals along the sidelines of the COP29 to explore and evaluate the geothermal resources of Azerbaijan.

A deal signed with oilfield services company Baker Hughes is geared towards identifying and evaluating Azerbaijan’s geothermal capacity for future development. More specifically, the partnership seeks to identify hydrothermal reservoirs, as well as look into the viability of enhanced geothermal systems.

SOCAR Green has also entered into a collaboration agreement with SLB that builds upon the work already done by GeothermEx to assess the potential of geothermal areas in the Karabagh region. The studies indicated that the sites of Istisu Valley, Garagol, and Zuar Spring has significant potential and warrant further geothermal exploration.

Under this new collaboration, SLB will provide technical support across all phases of SOCAR Green’s geothermal projects, including reconnaissance exploration, prefeasibility studies, feasibility assessments, detailed design, construction, operation, and future expansion.

Geothermal has potential to play an important role in Azerbaijan’s commitment of attaining a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Azerbaijan’s geothermal ambitions date back to 2015, but projects so far have progressed only until the exploration stage.
